  1. We need to purchase travel insurance. Going to an all inclusive resort in DR in August. My mom is ill with Lou Gehrig’s. Which policy is best for me to take for “worsening of conditions”? CSA, Travel Safe and Travel Guard have all been recommended to me by insuremytrip.com I have read horrible reviews about all of these companies for people trying to put in claims. Do you have any advice/suggestions? Thanks, Lisa

    • Lisa,

I’m sorry to hear about your mom’s condition.

Most travel insurance policies will contain exclusions for pre-existing conditions which would exclude claiming for any costs related to cancelling your trip or returning earlier than planned as a result of your moms condition. Some policies will cover pre-existing conditions provided they are “stable” which usually means there has been no change in the condition or worsening or change in medication. I would not think that Lou Gehrig’s would qualify as a stable condition under most travel insurance policies.

You may want to consider purchasing a policy which allow you to cancel for “any reason” – I believe Travel Guard offers this type of policy. It only pays out a portion of your trip cancellation loss ie. 50% but it would provide some protection in the event you must cancel your trip.

Regardless, I would still purchase travel medical and trip cancellation for yourself because something other than your moms condition may come up and you would want to protect yourself.

      Mark
